My parents' friends were over one night and I noticed that their license plate read only "457".?My parents' friends were over one night and I noticed that their license plate read only "457".? I asked the husband what it meant, but he seemed to have no idea. Does it mean he is a Vietnam Vet or something? The car is registered in Nebraska to a private citizen. Thanks. well, the first thing that popped into my head was a .457 Caliber handgun, "it can blow your head clean off.." (Dirty Harry), but, to family that has the car, it can possibly mean a lot of other things... but that is what I would say it was.... .457 Magnum. Hugs! Auto parts : Antenna Mast Acura 1995 . Subaru . How to Calculate Alternator OutputAlternators are reliable, efficient devices that produce electricity to power the electrical components in your vehicle. The name is derived from the term "alternating current," as this is the type of current an alternator produces. However, the electrical equipment in your car requires direct current, so the alternator also contain a rectifier that transforms AC current to DC current. If you want to calculate your alternator output, use a multimeter. Using the voltage and ampere readouts, you can then calculate wattage. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Protective gloves Safety goggles Multimeter Step by Step : 1 Wear protective rubber gloves and a pair of safety goggles. You need to start your car's engine to calculate alternator output. 2 Open and secure your car's hood. Start the car's engine and let it idle for a while, if the engine is cold. This ensures your battery gets charged and provides a more accurate alternator output. 3 Turn on several electrical items in your car. Equipment that uses high energy is best -- such as the headlights, heater fan or air-conditioning. This makes the alternator work harder as it has to produce increased amperes to power the devices. 4 Select "voltage" on your multimeter. Make sure it you set it in the range of 10-volts to 15-volts. Alternators produce an average of 14-volts. 5 Place the sensor on the end of the red wire onto the positive terminal of the car battery. It's clearly labeled. Place the sensor on the end of the black wire onto the negative terminal of the car battery. 6 Read the voltage calculated by the multimeter. It will read 13.5 to 14.4-volts if your alternator is operating correctly. If it's less than 12.5-volts you need to get it checked out. Remove the sensors from the battery. If you want to calculate wattage you need to write the voltage down, or remember it. 7 Select "amperes" on the multimeter. Set it in the range 50 to 100 amperes. Alternators running high energy electrical equipment produce 75 amperes or more. 8 Place the multimeter sensors on the end of the wires to the positive and negative battery terminals. Red wire goes to the positive terminal and black to the negative terminal. 9 Read the amperes on the multimeter. If you have high energy equipment running and your alternator is operating properly the reading should be in the range of 70 to 90 amperes. If it's less than 70 amperes, ensure you have turned on power-consuming items in your car. If you've already turned on high-energy items and the reading is still less than 70, get your alternator checked. Step by Step : 10 Remove the sensors. Remember the reading, or write it down, if you want to calculate wattage. Step by Step : 11 Close your car hood. Turn off the electrical devices and then turn off your car engine. Step by Step : 12 Multiply the volts by the amperes. This calculates the wattage of the equipment you used. For example, if you wrote down 13-volts and 80 amperes then your equipment was using 1,040 watts.
Subaru . How to Measure Alternator OutputAlternators replaced generators in cars many years ago. They are robust, produce more electricity and are generally maintenance-free. An alternator is so named as it produces alternating current, the same as electricity produced for use in your home. The current is then converted from alternating current to direct current via a rectifier situated at the rear of the alternator housing. The electricity produced by the alternators charges your battery and all the electrical equipment in your car. If you find your battery is not charging, or the electrical equipment isn't operating properly, then measure the alternator output to check that it's producing the correct current. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Protective gloves Protective goggles Multimeter or voltmeter Helper Pen and paper Step by Step : 1 Put on protective gloves and goggles before attempting to measure the output of your alternator. Ensure you don't have any loose clothing or jewelry that might get caught in your car engine. 2 Open the car's hood. Get a friend or family member to sit in your car and start the engine. Let the engine run at idle speed for a while before measuring the output from the alternator. 3 Set your multimeter to measure volts. Car alternators produce between 13.5 volts and 14.4 volts, if they are operating correctly. Adjust the multimeter so it's in the range of 10 to 20-volts. 4 Attach the small spring-loaded clamp on the end of the red (positive) wire from the multimeter to the positive terminal of your car battery. Attach the small spring-loaded clip on the end of the black (negative) wire to the negative terminal of your battery. The battery terminals are clearly labeled. 5 Read the multimeter display. Make a note of the voltage on a sheet of paper. If the voltage is between 13.5 and 14.4 volts, the alternator is operating correctly. 6 Get your friend or family member to turn on as many electrical items in the car as possible. The engine speed will drop. Read the multimeter. It should remain at around the same voltage as before as the alternator compensates for the extra electricity needed to power the equipment. Make a note of the voltage on a sheet of paper. 7 Ask your friend or family member to increase the engine speed to 2,000 rpm. Ensure the electrical equipment is still on. Read the multimeter display. Make a note of the voltage. It should increase slightly, but not exceed 15 volts, as the voltage regulator should compensate for the increase in engine speed. 8 Turn off the electrical equipment and the car's engine. Remove the wires from the multimeter attached to your battery. Close your car hood. 9 Check the three readings you wrote down. If they are all in the range of 13.5 to 14.4 volts, the alternator is working properly. The last reading should be slightly higher than the first two. If the readings are lower than 13 volts or higher than 15 volts you need to get your alternator checked by a professional.
